Buy Now, Pay Later, at a Glance

'Buy now, pay later' splits a purchase into installments — the common pay-in-4 is four payments over about six weeks, often interest-free. But it's still a loan: there are due dates, longer plans can charge interest, auto-drafts can cause overdrafts, and it increasingly may affect your credit. This guide covers how it works and the risks. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Is it really interest-free?

Short pay-in-4 plans usually are, if you pay on time. Longer plans often charge interest. Always read the specific offer — 'interest-free' applies to some plans, not all.

2 Will it hurt my credit?

It's changing. Many pay-in-4 plans historically didn't appear on credit reports, but more providers now report them, and missed payments in collections can hurt regardless. Assume a plan might affect your credit.

3 What's the biggest hidden cost?

Often your own bank's overdraft fee when an automatic payment hits a low account — sometimes larger than any BNPL late fee. Keep the money there on each due date.

4 What if I return the item?

You generally keep owing the payments until the refund works back through the store and the BNPL company. Keep your receipt, follow up, and don't just stop paying.

5 When does BNPL make sense?

When you could pay for the item now and you're using the plan for convenience at zero interest. If it's the only way you can afford it, that's a sign it's not really in the budget.

6 Does it have credit-card-style protections?

Not all of them. A rule that would have required card-style dispute and refund protections was withdrawn, so handling depends on each company's policy. For strong dispute rights, a credit card is sturdier.
