Bose Audio and Hearing: A Plain-English Guide
Last verified: August 2026
Bose usually just sounds good, but the newer headphones, earbuds, and soundbars lean on a phone app and a lot of little settings. Here's all of it in plain English, including an honest word on hearing.
About Bose headphones and soundbars
Bose puts its name on a few very different gadgets: the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones and Earbuds, the step-down QuietComfort models, and TV soundbars like the Smart Soundbar and Smart Ultra Soundbar (older Soundbar 500 and 700 models still work just fine). Almost every setting for all of them lives in one free app, now simply called the Bose app. If you have an older one named Bose Music, it's the same thing, just renamed.
The headphones and earbuds connect to your phone over Bluetooth, and the whole point is that you choose how much of the world you let in. Quiet mode is full noise cancelling, lovely on a trip. Aware mode pipes the room back in so you can hear a doorbell or a spouse without taking the buds out. There's also a handy trick called multipoint that lets your Bose stay connected to two devices, like your phone and your tablet, at the same time.
A Bose soundbar plugs into your TV with one HDMI cable and has a Dialogue Mode that lifts voices above the background, which is a real relief as our ears age. One honest note, though: ordinary earbuds are not hearing aids. Aware mode can make a close conversation in a quiet room a touch easier, but it will not sort out one voice in a noisy restaurant, and it's no substitute for getting your hearing checked.
When to skip the DIY and just call: Soundbar won't make sound · Remote won't control the volume · A listing you think might be a fake
Common Questions
1 How do I pair my Bose headphones or earbuds?
- Put the buds in the case and open the lid, or put the headphones on, then hold the Bluetooth button until you hear 'ready to pair.'
- On your phone, open Settings, then Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
- In the list of nearby devices, tap the name of your Bose (it will say something like Bose QuietComfort Ultra).
- Wait for it to say Connected; after that it reconnects on its own next time.
- For the easiest path, set them up in the Bose app first and it walks you through pairing without touching the Bluetooth menu.
2 How do I make TV voices clearer on my Bose soundbar?
- Run one HDMI cable from the soundbar to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC (use the optical cable if your TV has no ARC port).
- On the TV, set the sound output to the soundbar if it doesn't switch on its own.
- Open the Bose app and go to your soundbar's audio or sound settings.
- Turn on Dialogue Mode (newer Smart Soundbars call it A.I. Dialogue Mode and adjust it on their own).
- Test it during the news by flipping it on and off; leave it on if you like the difference.
3 Can Bose earbuds work as hearing aids?
- Understand that Aware mode is meant to keep you aware of your surroundings, not to correct a hearing loss.
- It works best one-on-one in a quiet spot; in a noisy restaurant it won't pick out the one voice you want.
- Know that ordinary earbuds are not medical hearing aids unless the box plainly says the device is a hearing aid.
- Read the label, not the ad: anything sold only as 'earbuds' or 'listening enhancers' is not the same thing.
- If you're straining to hear people, treat that as a reason to get your hearing checked by an audiologist.
4 How do I avoid counterfeit Bose and fake-support scams?
- Buy only from Bose.com or a store where Bose is the listed seller; a rock-bottom price from an unknown seller is a red flag.
- Check the box for a serial number and clean printing, since misspellings, smudged logos, or a missing manual are warning signs.
- Remember real support will never ask for your password, a gift card, or remote control of your computer.
- Never call a 'Bose support' number from a rushed web search, since scammers pay to place fake ones at the top.
- If a caller claims a problem with your order, hang up and call back only using a number from the real website, or call me first.
