Getting the Most From AirPods

AirPods are Apple's wireless earbuds. They pair almost instantly with an iPhone, switch between your Apple devices, and (on the Pro models) block out noise or let it in. The controls are hidden in the stems or the buds themselves, which is what trips most people up.

The good news is they're forgiving: pop them in your ears and they usually just work. This guide covers the everyday things people ask me — how to pair, how to change the volume, what the taps and squeezes do, and the panic moment of a lost AirPod.

They work best with an iPhone but can also connect to an iPad, Mac, or even an Android phone or a TV in a pinch.

When to skip the DIY and just call: First-time pairing that won't take · Only one AirPod works · You've lost one and want help finding it.

Common Questions

1 How do I pair them with my iPhone?

  1. Unlock your iPhone and hold it near you.
  2. Open the AirPods case lid (keep the AirPods inside).
  3. A card pops up on the iPhone — tap Connect.
  4. That's it; they'll auto-connect from then on.

2 How do I control them — play, pause, and volume?

  1. On AirPods Pro, squeeze the stem: once to play/pause, twice to skip forward, three times to go back.
  2. Adjust volume by sliding a finger up or down the stem (Pro), or by asking Siri, or on your phone.
  3. Press and hold the stem to switch between noise cancelling and letting sound in.
  4. On older AirPods you double-tap the bud instead.

3 How do I switch them to my iPad, Mac, or TV?

  1. On another Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account, choose the AirPods from the volume or Bluetooth menu.
  2. For a non-Apple device (Android, some TVs), open the case, hold the small button on the back until the light blinks white, then pick the AirPods in that device's Bluetooth list.
  3. They can only actively play from one device at a time.

4 How do I find a lost AirPod?

  1. On your iPhone, open the Find My app → Devices → your AirPods.
  2. See them on the map, and use Play Sound to make the missing one chirp.
  3. Newer Pro cases can even guide you closer with directions.
  4. If a bud fell out at home, Play Sound usually finds it under a cushion fast.

5 Why is the sound cutting out or only in one ear?

  1. Clean the AirPods (earwax on the speaker mesh is the usual culprit) — gently, with a dry soft brush.
  2. Put both back in the case for 20 seconds, then take them out to reset the connection.
  3. Make sure both are charged (check on the phone).
  4. If one still won't work after cleaning and resetting, it may need service.
