Because motors surge when they start, and several starting together can overload the generator. Bringing loads up one at a time keeps only one motor starting at a moment.

2 How do I know if I'm overloading the generator?

Watch and listen: a bogging engine, dimming or flickering lights, a tripped breaker, or an overload light all mean you're asking too much. Shed a load and it should recover.

3 Do I have to run everything all the time?

No — most loads can be cycled. Run the well pump to fill water, then give that power to the furnace and fridge. Cycling lets a modest generator cover a long list.
