Square, Clover, Toast or Shopify? Matching a System to Your Business
Last verified: October 2026
A fair, no-hype guide to the four big payment systems — what each one suits, the contracts to watch, and how to match one to the way you actually sell. Rather have a hand deciding? My number is (330) 200-8042.
Choosing a Payment System, at a Glance
Square, Clover, Toast, and Shopify are all good — at different things. The right one is the one that fits how your business actually sells, not the one with the loudest ad. This guide walks you through it in plain English: how each makes money, what each suits, the contracts to watch, and the fees below the headline rate. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Which payment system is the best?
There isn't one. Toast is built for restaurants, Shopify shines when you also sell online, Square is the easy no-contract all-rounder, and Clover is flexible but depends on who sells it to you. The best choice is the one that fits how you sell.
2 Do any of them lock me into a contract?
Square and Shopify are month-to-month. Clover and Toast are often sold on multi-year contracts with auto-renewal and early-termination fees — read the agreement and get the term and exit costs in writing before you sign.
3 Is the headline rate the whole cost?
No. Ask about monthly, PCI, statement, gateway, and chargeback fees too. A low rate with fat monthly fees can cost more than a slightly higher flat rate. Add up a normal month to compare fairly.
4 I run a restaurant — what should I look at?
Start with Toast, which is purpose-built for tables, tabs, tips, and kitchens, then compare Square's restaurant tools. Weigh the longer contract against how well the tool fits your nightly routine.
5 Can I switch later if I pick wrong?
Yes, especially if you avoided a long contract. All four let you export your items and customers; our switching guide walks through the move. That's why a no-contract start is the safest first step.
6 You use Square — so is Square best?
I use Square because it's simple and the costs are easy to see — that's one owner's reason, not a verdict for you. I've set others up on Shopify and sent restaurants to Toast. Your business decides, not my habit.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Choosing where to take payments is one of my favorite things to help with — get it right once and it serves you for years. I'll look at how you sell and help you match a system and avoid a bad contract, with nothing to sell you and no commission from anyone. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
