Identifying Your Inverter, at a Glance

Bought a home with solar, or just never learned the details of your own? You can usually tell what you have safely, from the outside. Start with the monitoring app: panel-by-panel views point to microinverters or optimizers, while one system number points to a string inverter. Look for a central inverter box (present for string and optimizers, absent for micro), and check for a battery and backup panel to know if you have outage power. Read the outside labels and dig out the paperwork — but never open anything. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 How can I tell if I have microinverters or a string inverter?

Check the app: panel-by-panel views point to panel-level electronics (micro or optimizers); one system number points to a string. Then look for a central inverter box, which microinverter systems don't have.

2 How do I tell microinverters from optimizers?

Both give panel-level views. The tell is a central inverter box: optimizers use one, microinverters don't. Panel-level monitoring plus a central box usually means optimizers.

3 How do I know if my solar has battery backup?

Look for a battery (a cabinet-sized unit) and a separate 'backup' or 'essential loads' panel. Those mean a hybrid setup. No battery means plain grid-tied, which goes dark in an outage.

4 Can I open the inverter to check the model?

No — never open it. The maker, model, and type are on labels on the outside, and the app and paperwork fill in the rest. Reading is safe; opening is a pro's job.

5 I bought a home with solar — where do I start?

Track down the paperwork and monitoring login from the seller, read the equipment labels, and use the app to identify the type. Find out whether any warranty transferred to you, too.

6 Why does it matter what type I have?

It shapes how you read your monitoring, how shade affects you, how service goes, and whether (and how) you could add backup. Knowing your system makes every conversation about it go better.
