When a portable power station acts up, it's rarely broken — it's usually a simple setting. The number-one surprise: the AC outlets have their own on-off button, so if your wall outlets are dead but USB still charges, just switch the AC side on. A unit that won't turn on is often asleep (hold the power button) or flat (charge it); one that shuts off has too much plugged in. 1 My AC outlets are dead but USB still works. Is it broken?
Almost certainly not. The wall-style AC outlets have their own on-off button, separate from the main power button. When it's off, USB and 12-volt still work but the outlets are dead. Find the button labeled AC and switch it on — this is the most common call I get.
2 It won't turn on at all — is the battery dead for good?
Usually it's just asleep or flat. Many stations drop into a deep sleep in storage; press and hold the power button for several seconds to wake it. If that doesn't do it, plug in the charger for a few minutes and try again.
3 Why does it shut off when I plug certain things in?
That's overload protection. Heaters, hair dryers, and other hungry or heat-making devices draw more than the station can deliver at once, so it shuts off to protect itself. Unplug the hungriest thing — if one device trips it every time, it's simply too big for this unit.
4 It won't charge. What should I check?
Check that you're using the right charger and both ends are seated firmly, and that the unit isn't too cold — many batteries refuse to charge below freezing to protect themselves. Warm it to room temperature and try again. For solar, confirm the connection, voltage range, and real sun.
5 When should I stop troubleshooting and call for help?
If the unit is swollen, leaking, scorched, or smells of burning, or took a bad soak or fall — stop, set it safely aside, and call the maker. A damaged lithium battery is not a fix-it-yourself job, and you should never open the case.
6 Is a loud cooling fan a sign of a problem?
Usually not. A fan running hard under a heavy load or fast charge is normal cooling and should settle down after. Give the unit open air to help it. Only a grinding or rattling fan — or a burning smell — points to real trouble.
