PayPal for Beginners, at a Glance

PayPal lets you pay online without handing your card number to every website. The single most important thing to learn: when you're buying, always choose Goods and Services — that turns on buyer protection. Friends and Family has none. This guide covers safe setup, linking your money, paying and getting paid, and disputes. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Goods and Services vs. Friends and Family — what's the difference?

Goods and Services is for buying; it carries buyer protection and the seller pays a fee. Friends and Family is for people you know; no protection. Never pay a stranger for a purchase as Friends and Family.

2 How long do I have to dispute a bad purchase?

Generally 180 days from payment, for Goods and Services. Start in PayPal's Resolution Center and act promptly.

3 Should I link a credit card or my bank?

A credit card adds a strong extra layer of dispute rights on top of PayPal's protection — the safer link for buying from people you don't know.

4 I got a 'your account is limited' email — is it real?

Don't click it either way. Open PayPal yourself and log in; a genuine issue shows up there with steps to fix it. Most such emails are scams.

5 Does PayPal cost money?

For buyers it's generally free; sellers pay a processing fee. Fees can apply to instant bank transfers and some credit-card-funded sends. PayPal shows any fee before you confirm.

6 A seller wants Friends and Family to 'save fees' — okay?

No. That strips your buyer protection. A legitimate seller accepts a Goods and Services payment.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
