Your Keurig — A Plain-English Guide
Last verified: August 2026
Descale the right way. Clean the needle. Fix weak coffee. And skip the "your Keurig warranty has expired" robocall.
About Your Keurig
Pod coffee makers are the most-used small appliance in the kitchen and the one people most often call me about. Descale lights that won't clear. Weak coffee out of nowhere. The "Add Water" error with a full reservoir. None of these mean the machine is broken — they mean it's dirty in a place you didn't know existed. This guide is the way you actually use it: press one button, get a hot cup, get on with your day.
When to skip the DIY and just call: Water leaking from underneath. Reservoir cracked. Coffee stays cool no matter how many times you descale.
Common Questions
1 Descale light won't turn off
- Run a full descale with vinegar or Keurig's descaling solution (PDF chapter 12 has the exact sequence). Most folks under-do this — you need 8 to 10 brews to flush the solution out.
- After the descale, press and hold the descale-light button for 5 full seconds. The light clears.
- If it comes back within a week, your water is hard. Switch to filtered or bottled water for the reservoir — Brita pitcher in the fridge is the cheapest fix.
2 Coffee suddenly got weak or watery
- Use a smaller cup size on the same pod. Less water through the grounds = stronger coffee. Try this first.
- If you have a Strong button (K-Elite, K-Supreme, K-Slim Plus), press it. Slower brew, more flavor extraction.
- Clean the needle (PDF chapter 13). Unplug the machine. Straighten a paperclip. Push it into the top needle (under the lid) and the bottom needle (in the pod holder). Twist. Hair-thin grounds come out. This fixes 90% of weak-coffee complaints.
- Pods older than 12 months taste flat even sealed. Check the date on the box.
3 "Add Water" or "Prime" with the tank full
- Slide the reservoir off. Look at the back wall near the bottom — there's a small magnet in a plastic tube. Tap the tube firmly with a spoon to free the magnet.
- Wipe the two small metal pins where the reservoir meets the machine. Mineral build-up blocks the contact.
- If that didn't work, lift the lid (NO POD), close it, press the smallest brew size. An air bubble may need to clear — gurgles for 10 seconds, then water flows.
4 Won't brew at all — pump runs but no water
- Make sure the pod holder is fully clicked in. The lid won't fully close without it, and the machine refuses to brew as a safety measure.
- Slide the reservoir off, drop the water down to half-full, slide it back. Brew empty (no pod) on the largest size — the air bubble usually clears within 10 seconds.
- If you just descaled and now nothing works, you didn't rinse enough. Run 6 more empty water brews back-to-back.
5 Pod stuck in the holder
- Don't pull with your fingers — the foil edge is sharp.
- Push it out from below with the bottom of an empty K-Cup. Lift the pod holder out first if you have to.
- If pods keep sticking, your needle is gunked — see #2 above and clean it.
Watch Out For: The Keurig-warranty robocall
⚠️ Heads up.
Robocalls saying "your Keurig warranty is expiring" are a scam. Keurig never calls you about warranties — they were set when you bought the machine and don't renew by phone. If you press 1 you'll be transferred to someone who tries to sell you a $300 "extended service plan" for a $100 machine.
The real Keurig customer support number is 1-866-901-2739 — write it on this guide so you have it. If you're not sure about a call, call me first at (330) 200-8042. 30 seconds saves $300.
Want a Real Person?
Most Keurig visits take 30 minutes — descale together, clean both needles, check seals, swap the charcoal filter. Flat $99 first visit, 30-day follow-up included. Bring the pods you don't like and I'll find you a roast you do.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
