A little gasoline or propane on hand is what keeps your generator useful when a storm rolls through — but fuel deserves a few simple, fire-safe habits so it sits quietly and safely until you need it. The short version: keep it in approved cans, store it cool and detached and far from any furnace, water heater, or pilot light, keep it fresh with stabilizer and rotation, and store propane upright and outdoors. 1 What kind of container should I use?
Only a container made and approved for fuel — a proper gas can that seals tightly and has a good spout. Never a milk jug, a water bottle, a glass jar, or an open bucket; those leak, break down, and give no one any idea what's inside. Many cans are color-coded (red for gasoline), and it's worth marking yours plainly so there's no mix-up.
2 How much fuel is safe to keep at home?
Enough to be ready, but not a giant stockpile that goes stale or becomes a hazard — for most homes that's a modest amount for the generator and the mower. There are also real limits: fire codes, and some towns, landlords, and HOAs, cap how much you may keep and how it must be stored. Check your local rules rather than guessing; a quick call to your fire department tells you what applies where you live.
3 Where's the safest place to store it?
Cool, dry, and ventilated, ideally in a detached shed or garage well away from the house — and never in the living space. Keep it clear of anything that could light the vapors: the furnace, the water heater and its pilot light, the dryer, space heaters, and sparking tools. And keep it up and out of the reach of children and pets.
4 Does gas really go bad? What's stabilizer?
It does. Most pump gasoline contains ethanol, which draws in moisture and, over weeks, turns gummy and can clog a small carburetor — the top reason a stored generator won't start when you need it. Fuel stabilizer is an inexpensive additive you mix into fresh fuel to keep it good far longer; add it if the fuel will sit more than about a month, and rotate your supply, using the oldest first.
5 How do I fill and carry the can safely?
Always set the can on the ground to fill it — never in a truck bed or on a tailgate, where it can build a static charge and spark. Keep the nozzle touching the can, fill slowly, and don't top it off. No smoking, engine off, wipe up any spill and let it dry, and carry the can upright with the cap tight — then take it out of a hot vehicle promptly.
6 How do I store propane, and what about old gas?
Store propane cylinders upright, outdoors, in the shade and away from heat — never indoors or in a closed garage, even in winter. For gasoline that's gone dark, sour-smelling, or watery, don't trust it in the generator and never pour it on the ground or down a drain. Keep it in a labeled can and take it to a household hazardous-waste drop-off; your county can tell you where and when.
