The pump down the well needs electricity to push water to the house, and most of those pumps run on 240 volts — which the small, quiet 120-volt inverter generators most people picture simply cannot make. Backing up a well takes a larger 120/240-volt unit sized to your pump, maybe a soft-start to tame its big surge, and a safe hookup by a licensed electrician. 1 Why does my water stop when the power goes out?

On a private well, an electric pump down in the well does all the work — it pushes water up to your faucets, showers, and toilets. No electricity means the pump can't run, so within a flush or two the water stops. City water keeps flowing in an outage, but a well leans entirely on your own power, which is exactly why so many country folks back up the pump.

2 Why can't my small, quiet generator run the well pump?

Most home well pumps run on 240 volts, and the small, quiet inverter units most people own put out only 120 volts — so they can't run the pump at all. You need a larger unit with true 120/240-volt output, usually through a round twist-lock outlet. And joining two little 120-volt units together doesn't help; two 120-volt units still make only 120 volts, never 240.

3 What size generator do I need for a well pump?

It depends on the pump's horsepower and its big start-up surge, so the honest answer is to have your pump checked. As a rough, general guide, a common half- to one-horsepower submersible pump often wants a 120/240-volt generator in roughly the 4,000-to-5,000-watt class, and a larger pump around one and a half horsepower usually wants more — in the neighborhood of the 6,000-watt class. A soft-start device can lower the surge and sometimes let a smaller unit cope.

4 Can I just plug the generator into the dryer outlet?

No — please never do this. Running a cord with two male ends into a dryer or range outlet to back-feed the house is called a suicide cord for good reason: it can send deadly voltage back onto the power lines where it can kill a lineworker, and it's a serious fire risk in your home too. The safe, legal way is a manual transfer switch or an interlock kit with an inlet, installed by a licensed electrician.

5 What's a soft-start, and will it let me use a smaller generator?

A soft-start is a small device an electrician fits to the pump that eases the motor up to speed instead of letting it slam on all at once. Because a well pump's biggest demand is that brief start-up surge, softening it can shrink the size of generator you need — sometimes enough to let a smaller, quieter unit handle a pump it otherwise couldn't. An electrician can tell you whether one makes sense for your pump.
