What Is an Inverter Generator?

An inverter generator is a portable generator built to make especially clean, steady power while running quieter and sipping less fuel than the old-fashioned kind. That makes it a favorite for keeping the essentials going in a power outage, and for camping, tailgating, and anywhere you'd like electricity without a roar. Here's the plain-English version, and there's a printable, 29-page guide up top if you'd like the full walk-through.

Common Questions

1 What makes it an "inverter" generator?

Inside, the engine makes rough electricity, the unit turns it into battery-style power, then electronically rebuilds it into a smooth, steady wave that's close to what comes out of your wall. That extra step is what makes the power "clean" — gentle on TVs, computers, and other sensitive gear.

2 Why is it quieter and easier on fuel?

A regular generator's engine runs flat-out the whole time. An inverter unit can speed up and slow down to match how much power you're actually using — often called eco or economy mode — so it's calmer, quieter, and stretches a tank of fuel further.

3 What can it run — and what can't it?

The small, quiet ones are wonderful for a refrigerator, lights, fans, phones, the internet, a TV, and a CPAP. What they can't do is run big 240-volt things like a whole house or most well pumps — that takes a larger unit and, usually, an electrician. Sizing is its own guide.

4 Is it safe to run during an outage?

Yes — as long as it lives outside. Every fuel generator gives off carbon monoxide, so run it outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust pointed away, with working CO alarms inside. Never in a garage or basement, even with the door open.

5 Do I need one if I live in an apartment?

Often not. With no safe outdoor spot 20 feet from windows, a running generator usually isn't practical for an apartment or condo — a quiet battery "power station" that charges indoors is frequently the better fit. In a house with a yard, an inverter generator shines.

6 How do I pick the right one?

Start with what you want to keep running, then match the wattage, the fuel, and the features (a carbon-monoxide shutoff is worth having). I'm glad to help you choose and set it up so you're not guessing at the store.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
