If your property has a barn, shop, garage, or well-house, you have options a bare lot doesn't. A ground array can stand beside whichever building makes sense, or panels can go on an outbuilding's roof — if it's sound, sunny, and strong enough, which a pro should confirm. Power runs between the buildings underground in conduit, through a trench a licensed crew digs to code — and you call 811 before any digging. You'll hear the word 'subpanel': it's just a smaller breaker box out in a building, fed from your main panel. One array can help power your whole place. 1 Should I put solar panels on my barn roof or on a ground mount beside it?

It depends on the roof. If it's sound, sunny, and strong enough — which a pro should confirm — panels up there can be tidy. If it's old, weak, or shaded, a ground mount beside it is usually the better choice, with ideal aiming and easy access.

2 What is a subpanel, and will my project need one?

A subpanel is just a smaller breaker box out in a barn or shop, fed from your home's main panel. Whether your solar project uses one is the installer's call, based on where the array sits and where you use the power.

3 How does power get from an outbuilding array back to the house?

Usually underground in conduit, through a trench dug between the buildings and buried to code by a licensed crew. Always call 811 first so buried utilities get marked — on a property with several buildings, there can be lines everywhere.

4 Can one solar array power several buildings?

Generally yes. In most home setups, solar feeds your whole electrical system, so it can offset what any of your buildings use. Tell your installer how you use each building so they can size and lay it out to fit.

5 Will solar by my well-house keep the water on during an outage?

Not by itself. A plain grid-tied system shuts off in an outage — pump and all — even with panels right next door. Keeping the water running takes a properly sized battery. Our well-pump guide covers it in full.

6 Are permits harder with more than one building?

A little more involved, not harder for you. Building and electrical permits still apply, and a subpanel or setbacks may add requirements. Your licensed installer knows the township rules and pulls the right permits.
