It's a cruel bit of timing. The big storms that really soak the ground and push water toward your foundation are the same ones that snap power lines and leave the neighborhood dark. So at the exact moment your sump pump has the most work to do, it loses the electricity it needs to do it. Basements flood not because the pump failed, but because it sat there powerless while the water climbed.

2 What does a sump pump need from a generator?

Less than you might fear. While it's actually pumping, a typical home sump pump draws only a modest amount — often just a few hundred watts, give or take. The catch is that its motor takes a much bigger gulp for a second or two the instant it starts, commonly several times the running draw, and that brief start-up surge is what you size for. A small, quiet inverter unit usually handles one pump with room to spare.

3 Can I just plug my sump pump into the generator?

For most homes, yes. Most residential sump pumps plug into a nearby wall outlet, so you run one good heavy-duty outdoor cord from the generator, unplug the pump from its dead outlet, and plug it into the cord. If yours is instead hardwired into the panel with no plug to pull, that takes a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician, which is its own guide.

4 What's a battery-backup sump pump, and do I still need a generator?

They work best as a pair. A battery-backup pump sits in the same pit and kicks on automatically the instant the power fails — covering the minutes before you start the generator, and the times no one is home. A battery only lasts so many cycles, though, so the generator carries the long haul and recharges the battery. One covers the gap; the other covers the duration.

5 How long can the pit go without pumping?

It depends entirely on how fast the water is coming in — minutes in a hard downpour, much longer in a light rain. A good clue is how often your pump normally cycles: if it's running every minute or two in a storm, the pit would fill and spill quickly if it stopped. So treat a storm outage as urgent, and get the pump powered promptly rather than waiting to see what happens.
