Connecting a Generator to Your Home Natural Gas Supply

Tapping your home's natural gas line for a tri-fuel generator is one of the most convenient upgrades you can make — no tanks, no refueling, power for as long as the gas keeps flowing. It's also one job in this whole series I won't walk you through doing yourself. This guide is about knowing what a good hookup looks like — the dedicated line, the right sizing, the small parts that protect your generator — so you can hire well and recognize a job done right. Common Questions

1 Can I just tap into my furnace's gas line myself?

Please don't. Gas work is licensed for good reason — a mistake can mean a leak, a fire, or a generator that starves for fuel right when you need it. A licensed plumber or gas fitter should always do this job, from the first cut in the pipe to the final pressure test.

2 What does a proper hookup actually involve?

Four things, in plain terms:

  • Its own dedicated branch off the meter, ahead of your other appliances
  • Pipe sized for the BTU load your generator needs
  • A small sediment/drip trap to catch debris and moisture
  • A quick-connect fitting so a portable generator can hook up and disconnect easily

3 Why can't the generator just share the line with the furnace or water heater?

Because they'd be competing for the same gas. A shared, undersized branch can starve your generator of fuel right when everything is running hardest — and in the wrong conditions it can even snuff out a pilot light elsewhere in the house. A dedicated branch avoids all of that.

4 Why does my generator make less power on natural gas than on gasoline?

Natural gas simply carries less energy per cubic foot than gasoline or propane — roughly 1,000 BTU per cubic foot versus roughly 2,500 for propane — so the engine makes a bit less power on it, the least of the three fuels. Size your generator against its natural-gas rating if that's the fuel you'll actually run on.

5 What if my home doesn't have a natural gas line at all?

Plenty of homes around here don't, especially out in the country. That's perfectly fine — a dual-fuel generator on gasoline and propane is the natural choice, and there's a separate guide in this series on hooking up to a propane supply instead.
