A well pump is one of the trickiest things to back up with a generator, mostly because of two words: 240 volts and surge. 1 Why does a well pump need 240 volts?

Most residential well pumps are wired as 240-volt submersible motors — you'll see a double-width breaker for it on your panel. A generator with only standard 120-volt outlets simply can't power one; you need a model with an actual 240-volt outlet.

2 How big a starting surge are we really talking about?

Often 3 to 5 times the pump's steady running watts, for a second or two while the motor gets moving. A typical ½-HP pump runs around 800–1,000 watts but can need roughly 2,100–2,500 watts to start; a 1-HP pump can need up to around 5,000 starting watts. Always check your own pump's label — these are typical ranges, not your number.

3 Can I just run my well pump on a regular 120-volt generator?

No. A 240-volt pump cannot run on 120 volts — it simply won't work, and trying to force it can damage the motor. You need a generator with a 240-volt outlet, connected through a transfer switch or interlock.

4 What's a soft starter, and do I need one?

It's a device installed at the pump's control box that smooths out its starting jolt, cutting the surge a generator has to supply by roughly 60–70%. It's not required, but it can make a smaller generator workable, or give a generator you already own a lot more breathing room.

5 I live in town on city water — does any of this apply to me?

Most of this guide is about private wells specifically. On municipal water, the utility usually handles pumping and pressure, often with its own backup power, so your home generator isn't doing that job.
