Alexa+ - Amazon's Smarter Alexa, Is It Worth Paying For?
Last verified: August 2026
Amazon gave Alexa a big brain upgrade and called it Alexa+. It can hold a real conversation, remember what you just said, and handle requests with several parts. The best news for a lot of people is that it is free if you already have Amazon Prime. Here is what it does, whether you already have it, and whether it is worth paying for if you do not.
What Alexa+ actually is
Alexa+ is Amazon's new, much smarter version of Alexa. The old Alexa was good at simple, exact commands like setting a timer or reading the weather. Alexa+ understands plain, everyday language and can carry a back-and-forth conversation, more like a patient helper than a clerk who answers one question at a time.
It is the same Alexa name and the same Echo speakers you already own. Amazon simply gave the assistant a smarter brain, and it arrives as a software update, so there is nothing new to buy.
Do you already have it?
Here is the happy surprise: if you are an Amazon Prime member, Alexa+ is already yours at no extra charge. Amazon finished rolling it out to everyone in the US on February 4, 2026. If you get free shipping on Amazon or watch Prime Video, you almost certainly have Prime, and Alexa+ is included.
The price, plainly
If you have Prime, Alexa+ is free. If you do not have Prime, Alexa+ costs about $19.99 a month on its own. For reference, Amazon Prime itself runs about $14.99 a month, or about $139 for the year. There is also a free chat version you can try at Alexa.com and in the Alexa app, with no Prime required.
The free chat version
You do not have to pay a cent to try the smarter Alexa. Amazon offers a free chat version at Alexa.com in a web browser, and inside the Alexa app on your phone. For a lot of folks, this free version is plenty. Play with it for a week, and if you find yourself wishing it worked hands-free on your Echo, then paying makes sense.
Free on your Fire TV
As of August 19, 2026, Alexa+ is free on Fire TV for everyone, whether or not you have Prime. If you have a Fire TV stick or a Fire TV built into your television, you can use the smarter Alexa right through your remote by pressing the microphone button. I go deeper on this in my guide on AI on Your TV.
What it does better
The biggest change is real conversation. You can ask a question, hear the answer, and then say what about tomorrow without repeating the whole thing. It remembers the thread, can hold on to your preferences, and can handle a request with several parts instead of getting stuck on the first one.
- Talk in plain, everyday words instead of memorized commands
- Ask follow-up questions without starting over
- Control smart-home lights, plugs, and thermostats by voice
- Reach Amazon Photos, Prime Video, and Amazon Music by asking
Which devices it works on
Alexa+ is not locked to one gadget. You can use it on your Echo speakers hands-free, at Alexa.com in a browser, in the Alexa app on your phone or tablet, and on Fire TV with the remote's microphone button. It is the same Alexa+ everywhere you use it.
So, is it worth paying for?
If you already have Prime, yes, turn it on; it costs you nothing extra. If you do not have Prime, take your time and weigh the $19.99 a month against how much you would truly use it. Try the free chat version first. For many people, the free version is enough, and there is no shame in deciding you do not need to pay.
Keep it from buying things by accident
A smarter assistant that can shop and act makes it easier to buy or change something just by talking. Set a voice purchase PIN, a short spoken code Alexa asks for before it will complete an order, or turn voice purchasing off entirely. Do this on day one. It is also worth reviewing what Alexa+ can access and what it stores about you, and never saying card numbers or passwords out loud near the speaker.
