Free vs. Paid AI in 2026
Last verified: August 2026
Sooner or later every AI app shows you an "Upgrade" button for about $20 a month. Do you actually need to pay? Here is the honest answer, with no sales pitch — the free versions are genuinely useful, and most folks at home never need to pay a dime.
The big four helpers are all free
There are four main AI helpers most people run into: ChatGPT (by OpenAI), Gemini (by Google), Copilot (by Microsoft), and Claude (by Anthropic). Every single one has a free version that is genuinely useful for everyday questions — explaining things, drafting letters, summarizing a confusing document.
What paying about $20 a month adds
Paying doesn't get you a different helper — it gets the same one with the brakes off: the newest and smartest model, fewer "come back later" messages, bigger document uploads, more image-making, and the fuller voice and deep-research modes. Whether that is worth $20 depends entirely on how much you use it.
- ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, and Copilot Pro all run about $20 a month.
- ChatGPT also has a cheaper "Go" tier for a little more than free.
- There are $200-plus "Pro/Max/Ultra" plans for heavy business users — almost nobody at home needs those.
The AI you may already have free
Before reaching for your wallet, check the device already on your desk. A Windows computer comes with Microsoft Copilot. An Android phone comes with Google's Gemini, woven into Gmail. An Apple iPhone, iPad, or Mac includes Apple Intelligence — at no extra charge.
My honest advice: start free, stay free
Start free and stay free until you hit a real, repeated wall — like using it every day, or needing to upload big documents. If you do want to try paying, try one plan, for one month, and cancel if you cannot truly feel the difference. Keeping your money is a perfectly fine outcome.
The scam to steer clear of
The real companies never phone, text, or email demanding your card "to keep your account." Every genuine upgrade is offered quietly inside the official app and is optional. Fake "ChatGPT Premium" apps and websites exist too — only ever pay inside the official app or website, never through a link someone sent you. And remember subscriptions auto-renew, so cancel in the same place you signed up.

Why I wrote this
I write these as printable handouts because a guide you can keep in a drawer beats a web page you have to find again. No jargon, no judgment, no rushing. If you'd rather have someone sit beside you and go through it together, that's a flat $99 first visit with the 30-day follow-up included — serving Portage County from Atwater, Ohio. — Bill
Want someone to set it up with you?
I'll sit beside you, we'll go through it together, and you set the pace. $99 flat for the first visit, 30-day follow-up included. Serving Portage County — Atwater, Ravenna, Kent, Streetsboro and the townships.
This guide is yours, free.
No sign-up, no email, no catch — it's free the way it looks free. Print it, save it, or share it with family. And if you'd rather hand the job off, Bill's two choices are right above: a $99 flat in-home visit or $49 remote help, often same day.
