Fixing Activation Errors, at a Glance

You open Word and a red banner says 'Unlicensed Product,' and suddenly you can't edit. It's alarming, but your files are perfectly safe — this is about Office confirming your license, not your documents. The three usual causes are the wrong Microsoft account (the most common), an expired or unpaid subscription, and two versions of Office clashing. Start at File > Account to see who you're signed in as, check your plan at account.microsoft.com, and sign out and back in with the right account. This guide covers each fix, and there's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What does 'Unlicensed Product' mean?

Office can't confirm you're licensed, so it drops to read-only until you sort it out. It's a permission issue — usually the wrong account or an expired subscription — not a problem with your files.

2 How do I get Word editing again?

Start at File > Account: sign in with the account your subscription is on, confirm the plan is active at account.microsoft.com, and remove any clashing second version of Office.

3 Why did this happen out of the blue?

Often a credit card expired and the auto-renewal failed, or Office got signed into a different Microsoft account. Both are easy to fix once you spot them.

4 Are my documents at risk?

Not at all. Activation errors only affect your permission to edit, not your files. Everything returns to normal once the license is confirmed.

5 I renewed but it still says unlicensed — why?

Office may need to recheck. Sign out, fully close Office, and sign back in with the renewed account. Running Office's built-in repair helps if it persists.

6 Should I buy a key to fix it?

No. This is almost always an account or subscription issue, not a missing key — a cheap key won't help and may be a scam. Fix the real cause instead.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
