1 What does an automatic transfer switch do?

It's the brain and the safety gate of a standby system. It watches your utility power, senses an outage, starts the generator, and switches your home from the grid to generator power — then switches back and shuts down when the utility returns. All automatically.

2 How fast does it switch over?

Usually within seconds of the outage, after a brief warm-up for the generator. You may barely notice the gap, especially if sensitive electronics are on a small battery backup to bridge those few seconds.

3 Can it accidentally send power back to the utility lines?

No — not through a proper transfer switch. It connects your home to only one source at a time, so generator and utility power can never meet. That isolation, required by the electrical code, protects your wiring and any utility crew on the lines.

4 Does it back up my whole house or just some circuits?

5 Can I install a transfer switch myself?

No. It ties directly into your electrical panel and the generator's controls — that requires a licensed electrician and a permit, and doing it yourself isn't safe or legal and can void the warranty.

6 How is this different from a portable generator's transfer switch?

A standby's switch is automatic — it starts the generator and transfers the load on its own. A portable usually uses a manual transfer switch that you operate by hand. Both provide the same safe isolation; our portable series covers the manual kind.
