Your roof likely already carries a warranty — and a solar install can affect it if nobody asks the right questions first. Here's what to check, and what to get in writing, before the first hole is drilled. Rather have a hand sorting it out? My number is (330) 200-8042.

Solar and Your Roof Warranty, at a Glance

Putting solar on a roof means drilling into it — and that can affect a warranty you already have. This guide explains the material and workmanship warranties already on most roofs, the workmanship warranty your solar installer should add, and how coordinating with your roofer and getting answers in writing before the first hole is drilled keeps that protection intact. There's a printable page-by-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Will adding solar void my roof warranty?

Not automatically. It can affect your roof's material or workmanship warranty depending on who does the work and how it's documented — which is exactly why asking ahead of time matters.

2 What's the difference between my roof's warranty and my solar installer's warranty?

Your roof's warranties come from the roofing material's manufacturer and possibly your original roofer. Your solar installer's own workmanship warranty is a separate promise covering the penetrations they add — ask its length, in writing.

3 Does it matter if my solar installer is 'recognized' by my roofing manufacturer?

It can help. Installers recognized or certified by your roofing manufacturer, or coordination with your original roofer, are two of the more reliable ways to keep your material warranty intact.

4 What if I can't find any warranty paperwork for my roof?

It's still worth checking with the manufacturer or your original roofer if you can identify them. Either way, your solar installer's own written workmanship warranty still matters and should be requested regardless.

5 When should I settle all this warranty homework?

Before the first hole is drilled — not after. Once work begins, a warranty question becomes a dispute to resolve instead of a simple thing to prevent.

6 What's the single biggest factor in whether a warranty claim ever comes up?

The quality of the flashing at each attachment point. Good flashing is usually why a claim never happens; poor flashing is usually why one does. Our flashing guide covers what good flashing looks like.
