What It Won't Run, at a Glance
A portable power station is a battery, and a battery has honest limits. It won't run high-heat appliances (space heaters, hair dryers, kettles, microwaves) for long, if at all; it won't run 240-volt loads (electric range, dryer, water heater, central air, most well pumps); and it can't back up the whole house. 1 Can a power station run a space heater?
A large one might, but only briefly — heaters draw enormous power and drain a battery fast. A small or mid-sized unit can't run one at all. For heat in an outage, a station is the wrong tool.
2 Can it run my electric range, dryer, or water heater?
No. Those are 240-volt appliances, and most portable stations supply only 120-volt power — and they're very hungry besides. That's generator territory.
3 Will it run my well pump?
No. Most well pumps are 240-volt with a big starting surge, beyond a portable station. That's a generator's job — see our rural and well-water guide.
4 Can it back up my whole house?
No — that's a permanent standby generator's role. A power station is a targeted tool for essentials: electronics, the internet, medical devices, lights, and the fridge in cycles.
5 Then what does it run well?
Plenty: phones, tablets, laptops, your Wi-Fi router, lights, a fan, a CPAP, and a fridge or freezer in cycles. Steady, sensible loads are its sweet spot — and it does them safely indoors.
6 How do I check a specific device?
Find its watts and whether it's 120-volt or 240-volt on its rating label, and compare to your station's output and capacity. If it's 240-volt or a big heat-maker, expect a no or a 'only briefly.' I'm glad to help you read the label.
