Nearly everything printed on a power station comes down to two numbers. Watts measure how much it can run at once — picture the width of a pipe. Watt-hours measure how much energy it holds — picture the size of a tank. You need enough of both: a wide-enough pipe to run your things, and a big-enough tank to last. 1 What's the difference between watts and watt-hours?
Watts are how much power flows at once — the width of the pipe. Watt-hours are how much energy is stored — the size of the tank. Watts decide whether a station can run something; watt-hours decide for how long.
2 How do I estimate how long it will run something?
Roughly, divide the station's watt-hours by your device's watts, then trim a little for inverter losses. A small, steady draw lasts a long time; a big, hot one drains it fast. Always use the real numbers off your own gear.
3 What is the starting surge?
Motors — in a fridge, freezer, fan, or pump — need a brief jolt to start that can be several times their running watts. Stations list a separate surge (or peak) figure for that instant. If it can't surge enough, the motor won't start, even if it could run once going.
4 Why won't a power station run my space heater or hair dryer?
Because they make heat, which takes enormous power — a very wide pipe pulling hard on the tank. A small station can't supply that much at once, and even a big one drains fast. Heat-makers are the classic thing a battery struggles with.
5 Which number should I use to compare stations?
The continuous output, not the big peak surge splashed on the box. The peak is a brief burst for starting motors; the continuous output is what runs your household all day. Compare continuous to continuous.
6 Can I just buy the one with the most watt-hours?
No. A big tank behind a narrow pipe still can't start the fridge. You need enough output (watts) to run your things at once and enough capacity (watt-hours) to last. Check both numbers.
