Installing an interlock is a routine job for a licensed electrician. They evaluate your panel, mount the sliding plate, add the generator breaker, and install the outdoor inlet — while your everyday circuits stay as they are. Your power goes off for part of the job so it can be wired in safely, then they test it with a generator. A permit and inspection confirm it's safe. 1 How long does installation take?
It depends on your panel, where the inlet goes, and whether the inspection is same-day. Ask your electrician for an estimate and leave yourself a little cushion.
2 Will my power be off the whole time?
No — only for part of the job, while the plate, breaker, and inlet are wired in. Plan around that stretch, and mention any medical equipment in advance so it's handled safely.
3 Do I need to be home?
Yes. Being home lets you point out the inlet placement, ask questions, and get the end-of-visit walk-through — your best chance to learn your setup.
4 Does an interlock rewire all my circuits?
No. An interlock works through the panel you already have, so your everyday circuits stay as they are. The new parts are the plate, the generator breaker, and the outdoor inlet.
5 What should I make sure happens before they leave?
A hands-on walk-through with the generator, clear labels on the main and generator breaker, and your operating questions answered and written down. If you have a well pump, confirm it's tested.
6 Is the permit and inspection a hassle?
