A solar proposal names a handful of parts, and knowing them lets you read it with confidence. Panels make DC power and last decades; the inverter turns it into home-ready AC and works the hardest; an optional battery stores power for evenings and outages. Inverters come as one central unit or tiny microinverters per panel, and batteries are described by two numbers — energy and power. 1 What are the main parts of a solar system?

The big three are panels (make DC power), the inverter (turns it into home AC and runs the system), and an optional battery (stores power). Racking, disconnects, and monitoring round it out.

2 String inverter or microinverters — which is better?

Neither is universally better. A string inverter is one central box, simplest and often cheapest, but shade on one panel can drag its group. Microinverters (or optimizers) handle shade better and show panel-by-panel data. Your roof's shade usually decides.

3 Do I need the most efficient, premium panels?

Usually only if roof space is tight. Higher efficiency squeezes more power from each square foot, but with room to spare, good ordinary panels can serve just as well for less. Fit and warranty matter more than the top spec.

4 How long do the parts last?

Panels are the long-haul part — warrantied for decades and fading only a hair each year. The inverter works hardest and may need service or replacement mid-life. Batteries have their own lifespans and warranties.

5 What do a battery's two numbers mean?

Energy (kilowatt-hours) is how much it holds — the size of the tank, or how long it lasts. Power (kilowatts) is how much it delivers at once — the size of the tap, or what it can run. You need enough of both.

6 Which part gives me backup power?

The battery, and only the battery. Panels and a plain inverter shut off in an outage for safety. If keeping power on matters, the battery is the part that delivers it.
