Troubleshooting a Home Battery, at a Glance

Most home battery 'problems' turn out to be perfectly normal behavior or a home wifi hiccup. This guide walks through the common worries — it didn't switch over, the app is offline, it ran empty after a long outage, or an alert appeared — with calm, owner-safe checks and a clear line on when to call your installer. The one firm rule: never open the unit or touch the wiring. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 The power went out and it didn't switch over. What do I check?

Start with the app — it usually shows a reason. Look at whether a system breaker or disconnect has tripped; if your installer showed you a safe, labeled switch, you can try it once. If it trips again, shows a fault, or you're unsure, call your installer. Never open the unit.

2 The app says it's offline. Is the battery broken?

Usually not. An offline app is almost always a home wifi issue — the battery itself may be working fine. Check that your internet is up and your router is on. If the wifi is fine and the app still won't connect, note it and ask your installer.

3 My battery went empty during a long outage. Did something fail?

No — that's normal. A battery holds a finite charge, so a long outage can use it up. It refills once the grid returns, or slowly from solar during daylight if you have panels. It can't recharge from a dead grid at night.

4 There's an alert or warning on the app. What should I do?

Note it exactly — the wording, any code, any status light — and call your installer. Don't try to interpret or clear it yourself, and never open the unit. Writing down what you see is the most useful thing you can do, and I'm glad to help you read it.

5 Can I open the battery or reset the wiring myself?

No — never. A home battery stores a large amount of energy and ties into your main panel. Opening it or touching the wiring is licensed electrician's work, and doing it yourself is dangerous. Reading the app is as far as any owner should go.

6 Who do I call — the installer, the utility, or Bill?

For a battery fault or alert, your installer. For a whole-street outage, your utility. And I'm glad to help you read the app, make sense of what you're seeing, and decide who to call — that part I can do right alongside you.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

When a battery does something you don't expect, a calm second opinion helps — and most of the time it turns out to be nothing. I'll help you read the app, make sense of any alert, and decide whether it's a call to your installer, your utility, or nothing at all. I don't open the unit or touch the wiring — for that I line up a licensed pro. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
