What's Under the Array

A ground array stands or falls on the ground underneath it. In winter, wet soil freezes and swells, and that swelling can lift a shallow footing — frost heave — racking a frame out of true over the years. The fix is to reach below the frost line, where the ground never freezes, so nothing lifts the footing. How deep that is here is set by your local building department and your engineer, so no number is given in this guide. Ohio soils vary widely too — firm loam, heavy clay that holds water, sand, rock, and low wet ground with a high water table — and your soil helps steer which foundation fits. 1 What is frost heave?

When wet ground freezes it swells, and that swelling can push a shallow footing upward. Over many winters a footing can slowly work its way out of place, racking a frame out of true. Setting footings below the frost line prevents it.

2 How deep does the frost line go in Ohio?

That depth is set by your local building department for your area and confirmed by your engineer for your exact site. I won't put a number on it, and you should be cautious of anyone who quotes one before checking your ground and your local code.

3 What kinds of soil are common in Ohio?

Quite a range, sometimes on one property: firm loam, heavy clay that holds water and can swell, sandy or loose ground, rocky rises, and low wet ground where the water table sits high. Each behaves differently when it freezes and holds a footing differently.

4 Does my soil change which foundation I need?

Yes. Firm, drivable ground often suits driven posts; rock tends to point to ballast; soft or wet ground may call for a deeper anchor, screws, or ballast; heavy clay says 'test it first.' Your installer and engineer match the foundation to your ground.

5 Do I need a soil test?

Not always — an installer with real local experience may know your ground. But where there's doubt (wet spots, suspected rock, heavy clay), a soil test is cheap insurance against a foundation that heaves or settles later. When one is suggested, it's usually looking out for you.
