The power inlet box is a weatherproof outlet a licensed electrician mounts on your outside wall and wires to your transfer switch. One heavy cord — often carrying 240-volt power — runs from the generator to that inlet, replacing a tangle of extension cords through a cracked window. 1 What is a power inlet box?

It's a weatherproof inlet the electrician mounts outside and wires to your transfer switch. Power flows in from your generator through protected connections — there are no exposed prongs like a backfeed cord.

2 Why is the generator cord so heavy?

Because it safely carries the full power of your circuits, often at 240 volts. That heft is what makes it safe — a lighter cord couldn't handle the load.

3 Can I use a regular extension cord instead?

No. The generator cord is a special heavy cord matched to your inlet and generator. A regular extension cord can't safely carry this power and won't fit the inlet.

4 Where should the inlet box be mounted?

Somewhere easy to reach, near your transfer switch inside, and positioned so the generator can sit safely away from windows while the cord reaches. The electrician mounts it; Bill can help you pick the spot.

5 Can I plug in during rain?

Only with dry hands, dry connections, and a cover that shelters the connection. Never plug into a wet inlet or with wet cord ends — water and power are dangerous together.

6 How do I care for the cord?

Uncoil it fully before use, keep connections off wet ground, don't pinch it, inspect it for damage before each use, and replace it if it's cut or cracked. Store it dry and easy to reach.
