Your After-the-Outage Checklist, at a Glance

The lights coming back on feels like the outage is over, but there's one more short job first: working through this checklist so nothing gets missed. Read both thermometers, check the freezer for ice crystals or 40 degrees or below, check that the fridge stayed at 40 degrees or below, and apply the 2-hour rule to anything that didn't. This guide covers all nine steps, for town and rural homes alike. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 The power's back on — is my food automatically safe?

No. Power coming back doesn't erase the time food spent warm. Read both thermometers first, then use the 2-hour rule on anything that got above 40 degrees.

2 What should I check first once the power is back?

Both thermometers, before you open anything else. The fridge and freezer readings answer most of the rest of the checklist for you.

3 My freezer still looks frozen — is the food safe?

If it still has ice crystals, or the freezer thermometer reads 40 degrees or below, it's safe to refreeze or cook, though texture may change a little.

4 Can I restock the fridge right away?

Give it a little time first. Let the thermometer show it's back to 40 degrees or below before loading it up, so it isn't catching up under a full load.

5 What about refrigerated medicine, like insulin?

Don't use the food rules for it. Call your pharmacist or doctor and tell them how long it was without power — they know your specific medicine.

6 Do I need to sort the whole fridge at once, or item by item?

Item by item. Some things will clearly pass and some will clearly fail. For anything you're unsure about, throw that one item out without doubting everything else.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
