LiFePO4 vs Lead-Acid vs AGM - An Honest Comparison
Last verified: September 2026
A fair, side-by-side look at the three batteries you'll actually run into — what each does well, where each falls short, and how to match one to your job. Want a second opinion? My number is (330) 200-8042.
Three Batteries, Compared Honestly
There's no single best battery — there's the best battery for your job. This guide lays the three you'll meet side by side: old, cheap, proven lead-acid; its sealed, no-fuss cousin AGM; and modern, long-lived LiFePO4 (LFP). We compare them fairly on upfront cost, weight, lifespan, usable capacity, maintenance, safety, and deep-discharge tolerance — then help you match one to what you actually need. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Is one of these the clear winner?
No — and anyone who says so is probably selling something. Lead-acid wins on upfront price, AGM wins on sealed no-fuss convenience for the money, and LiFePO4 wins on life, weight, and low upkeep. The right pick fits your job and budget.
2 Isn't AGM just a lead-acid battery?
Yes. AGM (absorbed glass mat) is a sealed, spill-proof type of lead-acid — no watering and it shrugs off vibration — but it's still lead-acid inside, so it shares the weight and shorter life.
3 Why does LiFePO4 cost more upfront?
You're paying for a much longer life, lighter weight, more usable capacity, and a built-in safety brain (the BMS). Spread over the years it lasts, it often costs less over its whole life.
4 Which one is lightest?
LiFePO4, by a wide margin, for the same usable energy. If you'll carry or lift the battery — or move a power station room to room — weight alone can decide it.
5 Which needs the least care?
LiFePO4 asks the least — no watering, and its BMS does the worrying. AGM is close behind (sealed, no watering). A flooded lead-acid battery is the hands-on one, needing distilled-water top-ups and ventilation.
6 Can I replace a lead-acid battery with LiFePO4?
Sometimes — there are LiFePO4 drop-in replacements — but not always. The charger and the device may expect lead-acid, so check compatibility first, or ask the maker. When in doubt, give me a call.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Stuck between LiFePO4, lead-acid, and AGM? That's exactly what I love helping with — an honest, plain-English look at what would fit your home and your budget, with nothing to sell you. $99 flat for an in-home visit, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
