Three Battery Types, Three Jobs
A starting battery (the kind in your car, also called SLI) gives a big, short burst to crank an engine, then the alternator refills it — and it hates being drained deep. A deep-cycle battery has thicker plates built to be run down and recharged over and over for steady power (RVs, trolling motors, off-grid, backup). A marine battery is usually a rugged, dual-purpose middle ground. Don't swap one for the other's job — and know that LiFePO4 'drop-in' deep-cycle batteries far outlast lead-acid. How they're built inside. A starting battery has many thin plates for a big, short burst; a deep-cycle has fewer, thicker plates to survive being drained and refilled over and over. A marine battery is usually a rugged middle ground.
3 Is a marine battery the same as a deep-cycle?
Not always. Many marine batteries are dual-purpose — part starter, part deep-cycle — and built for vibration and damp. Some lean toward starting, some toward deep-cycle. Read the label to see which.
4 Are LiFePO4 drop-in deep-cycle batteries worth it?
