Free vs. Paid

Imagine handing someone you love a song that is truly about them - their name, their story, the things you cherish - written and sung just for them. That used to take a songwriter, a studio, and a lot of money. Now a free website called Suno can do it in about a minute, from a few plain words you type in.

What Suno Actually Is

Suno is a website, and an app, made by a company of the same name. You give it a short description of the song you want, and it writes the words, composes the music, and sings it - all by itself, in about a minute.

Think of it as a tireless songwriter and band rolled into one. You do not tell it which notes to play. You tell it the feeling, the person, and the style, and it fills in the rest. Because a computer is doing the singing, the voice is not a real human being, even though it can sound surprisingly real and warm.

  • It is not a real human singer - the voice is generated by a computer.
  • It is not a recording studio, and it will not sound perfectly polished.
  • It is not always the same twice - ask for two songs and you get two different ones.
  • It is not a replacement for a real musician when you need one.

What It's Good At - and Not

Knowing where Suno shines, and where it stumbles, saves you frustration. Here is an honest picture.

A good rule: Suno is wonderful for turning your feelings about a person into a heartfelt, personalized song to give as a gift. It is weakest when you need professional polish or exact control over every word and note.

Getting the App or Website

There are two ways to use Suno. Both are free to start. Pick whichever feels easier - you can always use both later.

  • Open your web browser - Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox.
  • In the address bar at the top, type suno.com and press Enter.
  • You will see a page inviting you to create or sign in.

Making a Free Account

To make songs, you sign in with a free account. It takes about two minutes and does not cost anything.

The free account is genuinely free. You do not need to enter a credit card to make one, and you should be suspicious of any screen that demands one just to sign up and make a gift song.

  • Tap or click "Sign up" (not "Log in," which is for people who already have an account).
  • Choose "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple" to skip making a new password, or use an email address.
  • If you use email, create a password and write it down somewhere safe.
  • Check your email for a confirmation message and click the link inside it if asked.
  • Once you are in, you will see your daily credits - the free allowance for making songs.

Free vs. Paid - Do You Need to Pay?

For making a gift song, the free version is almost always enough. Here is the honest difference so you can decide.

My advice: start free and stay free. About ten songs a day is plenty to make a lovely gift, and the credits refill each day. Only consider paying if you want to use a song in a business, or you are making songs constantly.

Making Your Very First Song

Here is the whole trick: find the box where you describe the song, type a sentence about the person and the feeling you want, and press the button to create it.

A warm, gentle country song for my wife Carol's 70th birthday, about 45 happy years together.

  • Make sure your cursor is clicked into the description box before you type.
  • Look for a Create or Make button and give it a moment to work.
  • If the page seems stuck, refresh it and try again.

Describing the Song Well

You will get a better song if you give Suno a little more to work with. Three simple ingredients make all the difference.

  • Who it is for - their name and your relationship, like "my grandson Eli."
  • The feeling - warm, joyful, funny, or tender, and the occasion.
  • A style - country, gospel, big band, folk, or "like an old love song."

Picking a Style or Genre

The style you choose sets the whole mood of the song. You can simply name a kind of music you both love, and Suno will do the rest.

Think about the music the person loves, or the music from when they were young. Matching the style to their taste makes the gift feel like it was made just for them - because it was.

  • Country or folk, for something warm and story-telling.
  • Gospel or soul, for something uplifting and heartfelt.
  • Big band or jazz, for a classic, dressed-up feel.
  • Soft rock or a slow ballad, for a tender love song.

Adding Your Own Words

You can let Suno write all the words, or you can hand it your own lyrics and let it sing them. If certain lines matter to you, this is how you make sure they are in the song.

If you write your own words, keep each line short and simple, the way a song sounds. You do not have to rhyme perfectly. A few heartfelt lines about the person often sing better than a long, complicated poem.

  • Let Suno write them - just describe the person and it invents fitting lyrics.
  • Write your own - look for a lyrics box and paste or type your lines.
  • Mix both - give it a few key lines and let it fill in around them.

Trying Again for a Better Take

The first song is rarely the last. Because making songs is free and fast, the real skill is simply trying again with small changes until one feels right.

Each new try uses about 5 of your daily credits, and you have roughly 50 a day. That is about ten chances a day to find a song you love - more than enough for one special gift.

  • The style - swap country for folk, or gospel for soul.
  • The mood word - try "joyful" instead of "gentle," or the reverse.
  • A detail - add a nickname, a hobby, or the occasion.
  • The length - ask for a shorter, simpler song.

Being Honest About AI Voices

This is an important page. I want you to love your song, and part of that is knowing exactly what it is before you give it. Then there are no surprises.

None of this takes away from the gift. People are moved because the song is about them, made with love by you. The homemade quality is part of the charm, the same way a handwritten card beats a store-bought one.

  • The singer is not a real person - the voice is generated by a computer.
  • The quality varies from song to song, even with the same description.
  • A word or name may be sung a little oddly now and then.
  • It will not sound as polished as a song on the radio.

Saving and Sharing Your Song

Once you have a song you love, you will want to keep it and share it. Suno makes this straightforward, and your songs stay in your account so you can find them again.

A lovely idea: play the song out loud at the birthday dinner or over a video call. Watching the person hear their own song for the first time is the best part of the whole thing.

  • Look for a Share button on the song to get a link you can send.
  • Text or email that link to family so they can play it.
  • Look for a Download option to save the song file to your device.
  • Your finished songs also stay listed in your account under your library.

Song Ideas for Every Occasion

Not sure where to start? Here are heartfelt occasions where a personalized song makes an unforgettable gift. Change the details to fit your life.

  • A birthday song naming the person and their age and joys.
  • An anniversary song about how the couple met and their years together.
  • A memorial song remembering someone dear, for a service or keepsake.
  • A silly, playful song for a grandchild, with their favorite things in it.
  • A get-well song to lift the spirits of someone who is under the weather.
  • A thank-you song for a friend, a caregiver, or a longtime neighbor.

Common Worries, Answered

Most people starting out share the same handful of concerns. Here are plain answers to the questions I hear most.

Staying Safe and Private

Making songs is safe and fun. A few simple habits keep it that way, especially since you are typing about people you love.

Assume that anything you type could be stored by the company. You can still make a beautiful, personal song using only a first name and happy memories - the private numbers are never needed.

  • Only use the official Suno at suno.com - avoid copycat apps that charge upfront.
  • Do not put private details in the prompt you would not want stored, like addresses, account numbers, or health specifics.
  • A first name and warm details are plenty - you do not need sensitive information.
  • Never enter payment information unless you have truly decided to pay.

The Free-Tier Rules, Plainly

The free plan is generous, but it comes with one important rule about how you are allowed to use your songs. It is simple, and easy to stay on the right side of.

  • Personal, non-commercial use only - gifts, keepsakes, family sharing.
  • Playing it at a party, sending it to family, keeping it for yourself.

Other Fun Things AI Can Make

A song is just the start. The same easy, playful spirit works for cards, pictures, and words, too. If you enjoy making a song, you may enjoy these.

You do not have to learn these all at once. Make one song first, get comfortable, and reach for the others when you are ready. Each one builds on the same simple habit of describing what you want in plain words.

  • Pair your song with a homemade card - see my guide on "Cards, Invitations & Flyers with AI."
  • Add a personal picture - see my guide on "Making AI Pictures for Cards & Fun - Safely."
  • Curious which music tools do what - see my guide on "Music Services Compared."
